CHILDREN VS. PROPAGANDA
According to the PBS Frontline documentary "The Merchants of the Cool", we pass by 3,000 advertisements a day. That is, by the time you are done with your young adult life, you have seen 10 million advertisements cumulatively. That's a bit of a shocker! And it's a tad scary when you're reading George Orwell's 1984 of how much influence the media plays into one's life, especially onto the younger generations. Children are consumers of the media, which dictates the way they should behave and what they should have. When Winston helps Mrs. Parson in her apartment, the children begin to go out of control, and become very violent, accusing Winston of being unorthodox (jokingly, that is, but just the same, it is rather terrifying). They have been constantly reminded of the principles of INGSOC, and this has been done so masterfully by the Inner Party that they seem a bit brainwashed to me... actually, it's not just a bit, they've been COMPLETELY brainwashed to exactly what the Inner Party wants them to be like. Quite a scary thought, isn't it? Orwell, you have created a sick and twisted world that has helped me appreciate the realities of my life, the simple pleasures of freedom and choice... I fear that it may someday turn into his extremities that he has built into Winston's world, but for now, I shall only show gratitude, and pray for the best.
